How to get started:
- Get a Co-Leader and get as many parents registered as possible. A troop needs at least two registered, trained
leaders. Some troops decide to become co-op troops in which several parents take turns running events& meetings and leader
responsibilities are divided among them. It is a good idea to get extra parents registered too because All registered
girls and adults are covered by Girl Scout insurance when participating in Girl Scout activities. Any adult who helps with
the troop finances or is in contact with the girls, including transporting them, will need to be registered and have a CORI
check run through council.Get your Troop parents involved. Troop parents (Moms and Dads) are usually glad to help you out
if you approach them individually and with a specific job.THE TROOP LEADER AND CO-LEADER SHOULD NOT NOT TRY TO DO EVERYTHING
IN THE TROOP ALONE!!! The strongest troops have strong parent support and get it by involving everyone (parents and girls)
from the beginning.
- Get Training
as soon as possible. Orientation and Basic Leadership training are available through
council, you will also need Age Level Training for which ever level of girls scouts you will be leading. (Daisy, Brownie,
Junior, Cadette, Senior, Ambassador). Check Council's Training Schedule here.
- Get a First Aider: It is best if this is you or your co-leader, because they will
need to attend all meetings and outings and will need to be trained in a council-approved First Aid/CPR Training course,
unless they already happen to be a registered nurse, EMT, or physician. Council offers several First Aid/CPR courses during
the year, and Holliston Fire also offers them. Girls should never be taken on outings away from the regular meeting place
without a First Aider.
- Go to Leaders Meetings!
We hold them once a month during the school
year and this is when we distribute new information from Council about new events and opportunities for troops, new trainings,
etc. It is also when you will find out about Millis Service Unit events and happenings, dates and times are posted on the
Leader page. The best reason for going to meetings is that this is your best chance to network with other leaders and get
your questions answered, so don't be a stranger! If you are a co-op troop, make sure everyone in the troop knows who
is responsible for going to Leader's meetings and passing on the info they get there. There is much info that is given at
leaders's meetings that is not not distibuted anywhere else.
- Set up a Troop Checking Account lots of banks offer special no-fee accounts for girl scouts. Having a troop
account makes filling out the Annual Financial Report at the end of the year much easier!!! (I know, you have just started
and we're talking about the end of the year already, but trust us on this!) Keep all your receipts and keep troop money and
your personal money strictly separate. By the way, don't get drawn into the trap of using your own money to pay for GS supplies.
You are already giving your valuable time, no-one expects you to give your money, too. Besides, the girls get a real thrill
out of knowing they earned the money they spend on activities. It is a real learning experience! Request form

- Get on the e-mail list
- we have a standing e-mail for any registered leaders/volunteers here in Millis.
A lot of very time-sensitive info gets passed out this way since we are very restricted in what can be posted on the web.

Check out these books :
- SafetyWise is the book that will keep your girls safe.
Get in the habit of consulting it each time you plan an activity. You will be given a SafetyWise book with your welcome packet,
when you attend training.
- Daisy,
Brownie and Junior leader guides are especially informative and easy to read. The Handbooks and Try-it/Badge books have infomation
on programs that you can do with the girls.
